He wasn't sure if it was at all comfortable, but she made do with what she had.
Rick was certain that no amount of exposure to the Georgia sun would prepare her for how truly cold the autumn alone was, but he made no comment on the matter because it didn't feel right to remind them that he was still there.Ĭathrine sat herself down on the sofa, the only piece of furniture in the living room that had escaped the wrath of the inhabitants defending themselves from the "walkers" outside. She looked at the man as he handed her one of the blankets he had brought with him, which she took gratefully, because not too long ago, Cathrine had wrapped herself in an additional jumper as the chill set in. "Sorry, kiddo," said Morgan, though there was a slightly deviant smile on his face, quickly masked as he approached Cathrine. The sudden shift capsized Duane towards his father's legs, which sent the book sprawling as he tried to right himself until his father's weight shifted once again. Rick found it slightly amusing to watch as Morgan stepped onto the mattress closest to the front door, where his boy sat with headphones on to drown out the silence falling between the adults and reading a comic book. "God, I miss central heating," Cathrine replied. "The house gets cold at night, so it'll keep you warm till the morning," Morgan added, just to clarify. He watched as his rescuer came into view with a couple of blankets tucked underneath one arm and a white prescription bottle in the other. Rick could feel the tension settle heavily, wet cement slowly drying the longer it was out in the cold air. Morgan came down the stairs, bare feet barely making a sound so when he spoke, heads turned towards him, instinctively prepared to strike the danger until realisation dawned. They were familiar with one another (and perhaps that was just another random stroke of luck), and it didn't seem to phase them that he was watching and learning, trying to understand how bad the world had become to force complete strangers together like this. Rick sat in the kitchen for a little while after the plates had been cleaned away, observing the way she was around the strangers. So, he focused on what he already knew and though he would occasionally spy her glancing towards the window, Cathrine had his full attention. He had a lot to learn and little time to understand. It was as if his mind was telling him to gather his strength first before he bothered himself with that new world. The quiet gave Rick some time to think, mulling over what he had been told (as little as that were) about this new world, but he became heavily distracted when the dishes were wiped clean and additional bedding was set up in the living room to house the new guests.īy then, Rick had lost interest in knowing more about the word beyond the covered windows. It had pushed these people to the very brink of their breaking points they had lost loved ones and been given no time to mourn their loss.
He couldn't imagine one so strong, it would burn a person out completely, but watching his company avert their eyes down to their food, as if wishing the ground would swallow them up, was a clear indicator that this painful new world was terrifying.
Everything had gone quiet at the dinner table after the talks of the fever.
